The English essayist Samuel Johnson once said, "A man who has not been in Italy is always conscious of an inferiority, from his not having seen what it is expected a man should see." More than two centuries later, his statement remains as true as ever, putting Italy at the top of many travelers’ must-visit lists. The country offers Greek wonders in Sicily; Roman ones in, well, Rome (as well as throughout the country that was the former heart of the Empire); and Renaissance masterpieces.Italy also offers other experiences that are timeless. Venice, on its network of canals on the lagoon, is a city so fantastic it can feel almost unreal. The hill towns of Tuscany have enchanted travelers for centuries, as have the sun-kissed Italian Riviera and the island of Capri. For many travelers headed to Italy, all roads lead to Rome where monuments of the Roman Empire still stand in breathtaking majesty: the Pantheon, the Colosseum and the Forum among them. In the Vatican City, the greatest artists and architects of the Renaissance left some of their most impressive masterpieces: St. Peter’s itself, but also Michelangelo’s Pietà and his murals in the Sistine Chapel. Not far north of Rome, the Uffizi Gallery, the Pitti Palace, the Boboli Gardens and other sites all await in Florence.Italy is much more than one long art history lesson, however. A visit to the country offers a chance to embrace the spirit of dolce far niente with long lunches enjoying the best of Italian cuisine and afternoons wandering medieval streets before enjoying a cappuccino on a picturesque piazza. Whether you want to see it all, or do nothing at all, there’s perhaps no more enchanting a place to do it than Italy.
